About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization in Germany seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to own and operate a critical data platform infrastructure. This role offers remote work across Germany or hybrid options in Cologne, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, or Berlin. You'll work alongside senior data engineers in a flat-hierarchy environment, managing production-grade streaming, replication, and orchestration systems that process thousands of daily tasks.
Responsibilities
- Run and own a self-hosted Apache Kafka infrastructure end-to-end, managing ACLs, client quotas, certificates, upgrades, and disaster recovery protocols
- Operate change data capture pipelines using Debezium, overseeing connectors, snapshots, offsets, replica lag, and sink loaders into cloud data warehouse environments
- Manage workloads on Kubernetes including a proprietary workflow orchestrator executing approximately 7,500 SQL and Python tasks daily, owning resource management, autoscaling, and complex debugging scenarios
- Automate access management and implement infrastructure as code across CI/CD pipelines, replacing manual processes with code-driven policies
- Own observability strategy and infrastructure cost optimization across Kafka, sink loaders, Kubernetes resource usage, and log volume expenses
- Participate in rotational triage duties (one week in three) handling ingestion requests, schema alerts, and analyst support while driving automation through AI-assisted review processes
- Serve as senior technical partner driving design reviews and multi-quarter initiatives, with opportunity to grow into cloud data warehouse architecture including access frameworks, partitioning strategy, and data modeling
- Optional participation in 24/7 on-call rotation
What We're Looking For
- Several years of production infrastructure operations experience with personal accountability, including on-call rotation; ability to explain specific failure scenarios, permanent fixes implemented, and data-driven trade-off decisions
- Deep hands-on expertise in Apache Kafka broker operations including cluster sizing, partition rebalancing, replication, ISR behavior, and version upgrades
- Production experience operating cross-system data replication, ideally Debezium on Kafka Connect, or database replication using binlog, GTID, WAL, or agent-based pipelines
- Strong production Kubernetes experience with resource management, autoscaling expertise, and sharp debugging skills for complex failure modes
- Infrastructure and access management as code across multiple environments using tools like Terraform and Ansible (or Pulumi, Helm, or similar), following strict least-privilege IAM principles; GCP experience preferred or transferable AWS/Azure knowledge
- Production-grade Python and SQL skills with cost-conscious approach to query performance, scanning volume, and data pruning
- Comfort in low-process, Kanban-driven environments where senior engineers self-organize, rotate triage duties, and prioritize automation over manual repetition
- Fluent English (C1 level) with ability to thrive in international team settings
- Optional skills valued: object-oriented design, data modeling/dbt, cloud data warehouse architecture, orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Dagster), stream processing (Beam, Flink, Spark), or workflow automation
