About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential consumer products company in a major digital transformation. Our client is repositioning their entire e-commerce platform around a new strategic direction — and they need a Principal UX Designer to lead the design of that rebuild from the ground up.
This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to the Head of Product Management & UX. You'll be responsible for translating executive vision into design direction concrete enough for Product and Engineering teams to execute against. This isn't about building consensus for change — the mandate already exists. Your job is to define what it looks like and see it through to launch.
This is the rare opportunity where a designer gets meaningful creative latitude on a real business with millions of customers and a working commerce engine. You'll hold the strategic direction in one hand and ship-ready designs in the other.
Responsibilities
- Define the vision and strategy for the core e-commerce experience in partnership with senior product leadership, establishing design principles that hold the rebuild together
- Lead design direction for homepage, category, search, product detail, cart, and checkout flows — owning how they connect end-to-end
- Create design system patterns that enable consistency across teams and make it easier for Engineering to build against your work
- Use AI prototyping tools weekly to put real, interactive experiences in front of stakeholders early when decisions are still cheap to change
- Participate in executive leadership reviews of the live customer experience, bringing the design perspective into strategic conversations and turning feedback into prioritized work
- Mentor other designers on the team, raise the craft bar, and help build a design practice where strong talent wants to work
- Make independent design decisions on direction while escalating cross-system trade-offs appropriately
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Proven experience leading a major e-commerce platform rebuild — you've taken a real consumer shopping experience apart and put it back together
- Deep e-commerce design expertise at scale, including merchandising, search, and subscription mechanics
- Ability to hold multi-quarter initiatives and two-week sprints simultaneously — you sequence work so the business keeps running during the rebuild
- Active use of AI prototyping tools in your current workflow — you know what today's tools can and can't do
- Experience presenting to and advising senior executives on trade-offs, taking hard feedback, and changing minds through better work on screen
- Strong mentorship skills and ability to elevate other designers without formal authority
- Exceptional craft across interaction design, information architecture, visual design, and systems thinking
- Advanced proficiency in Figma and modern design tooling
- Understanding of technical constraints and build costs — you design with engineering reality in view
Preferred:
- Experience designing for subscription or replenishment commerce models
- Background in health, wellness, CPG, or sustainability categories
- Experience building or rebuilding design systems that engineering teams actually adopted
- Public company or turnaround environment experience where pace and scrutiny are high
- Research fluency — comfortable running your own studies when needed
