We are representing a confidential research institution in the Paris-Saclay area that is advancing sustainable energy solutions through cutting-edge artificial intelligence research. Our talent team is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join a groundbreaking project focused on AI applications for renewable energy production and subsurface storage systems.

This position is part of a prestigious research grant exploring how reinforcement learning and advanced mathematical control theory can optimize geothermal energy, underground hydrogen storage, and carbon capture technologies while minimizing induced seismicity risks. You will contribute to interdisciplinary work at the intersection of AI, geomechanics, and control theory with real-world impact on Europe's energy transition.

Responsibilities

• Develop robust, stable, and adaptable reinforcement learning algorithms for controlling systems governed by nonlinear, non-smooth partial differential equations
• Enhance predictive models for induced seismicity, production control, and optimization in subsurface fluid injection scenarios
• Integrate AI methodologies with geomechanics and control theory to deepen scientific understanding of fluid injection mechanics and earthquake dynamics
• Conduct research and develop experimental tools and frameworks in close collaboration with the principal investigator and research team members
• Author scientific publications and contribute to advancing state-of-the-art knowledge with impact across academic and industrial communities
• Participate in quality assurance processes, including documentation and procedure updates as needed
• Support the institution's sustainability initiatives within your research activities

What We're Looking For

• PhD in applied mathematics, computational science, engineering, or a closely related field
• Strong scientific competencies and demonstrated motivation for high-impact research
• Solid foundation in applied mathematics with expertise in at least one relevant domain: control theory for ODEs/PDEs, non-smooth systems, dynamics, mechanics, geomechanics, or geophysics
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++
• Knowledge of machine learning techniques, particularly reinforcement learning approaches
• Laboratory experience and collaborative mindset for interdisciplinary teamwork
• Fluency in written and spoken English (required)
• Ability to work on the Paris-Saclay campus in Palaiseau, accessible by public transport and car

This is a full-time, two-year fixed-term contract position based in Palaiseau, Île-de-France. The role includes 25 days annual leave plus 18 additional days off, with flexible telework options available after manager approval.
