Responsibilities
We are representing a confidential research institution in the Paris-Saclay area. As a doctoral researcher, you will play a central role in designing and constructing innovative experimental apparatus to reproduce and control induced seismicity in a laboratory setting. Your work is part of an ERC-funded project focused on preventing human-induced earthquakes related to subsurface fluid injection for renewable energy and storage applications.
You will own the full development chain:
- Conceptualize and design advanced geomechanical laboratory prototypes
- Integrate mechanical design, materials engineering, sensor implementation, and controller systems
- Assemble and rigorously test experimental setups
- Conduct data analysis and numerical modeling to validate experimental findings
- Author scientific papers in close collaboration with the principal investigator and research team
- Contribute to quality assurance procedures and sustainability initiatives within the research group
What We're Looking For
We need a highly motivated candidate with strong scientific foundations and research potential:
- Master's degree or equivalent in geotechnical engineering, geophysics, geomechanics, or a closely related experimental science
- Demonstrated experience in experimental testing and apparatus design (laboratory environment preferred)
- Interest and aptitude in numerical modeling, mechanical design, and electronics
- Proficiency in Python programming
- Familiarity with industrial design software
- Solid grounding in physics, mathematics, and mechanics
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Team-oriented mindset with hands-on laboratory experience
- Fluent English (spoken and written) is mandatory
- Ability to provide contact details for two academic references
