Head of Engineering (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential clean-tech software company in München that is building critical infrastructure for European businesses managing energy operations. This is the most senior engineering role in the organization—there is no CTO above you. You will own technical direction, lead an 11-person engineering team including two squad leads, and serve as the engineering voice on the leadership team.

This is a hands-on leadership position. You will stay close to the code and architecture while setting strategic direction. If you have been away from technical work for several years, this may not be the right fit.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop an engineering team of 11, including hiring, performance management, retention, and growth
• Own the technical architecture across SaaS platform, IoT integration layer, time-series data pipelines, forecasting services, and automation systems
• Set technical direction including architecture decisions, build-vs-buy trade-offs, and platform evolution
• Deliver quarterly roadmap execution in partnership with Product, surfacing dependencies and making critical trade-off calls
• Manage operations including reliability, incident response, on-call processes, security posture, and cloud infrastructure spend
• Run incidents professionally with fast response, honest postmortems, and preventive fixes
• Collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, and domain experts to build against real-world technical and regulatory constraints
• Scale architecture to support growing data volume, customer count, and team size
• Maintain lean processes appropriate for an 11-person team while ensuring reliability

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 3+ years leading engineering teams in a product company, including senior engineers or squad leads
• Hands-on leadership experience in lean teams without layers of managers to delegate through
• Demonstrated ownership of delivery predictability and reliability for production systems with real customer dependencies
• Strong technical judgment in at least two of: cloud and distributed backend systems, multi-tenant SaaS, high-volume or time-series data pipelines, IoT and device integration, real-time telemetry, ML or optimization in production
• Deep enough technical expertise to earn engineers' trust, make architecture calls, and set technical direction
• Real experience running hiring and performance management, including growing people and managing performance issues
• Ownership mindset toward incident management, security, and compliance rather than delegation
• Clear written and spoken English; German is a strong plus as most customers are German mid-market companies

Nice to Have:

• Experience in energy, industrial, SaaS, or physical-world domains
• Previous experience as the most senior technical person in an organization (CTO, VP Engineering, or equivalent)

Not Required:

• Being the strongest coder on the team (though you must read code, make architecture calls, and occasionally build)
• A "Head of" title already—we evaluate based on what you have accomplished
