GIS Specialist

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential renewable energy organization with operations across Africa. They need an experienced GIS Specialist to strengthen how geospatial insights inform critical business decisions around energy access, market expansion, and operational planning.

This remote role offers the chance to build production-ready GIS infrastructure that directly impacts electrification efforts across the continent. You'll work at the intersection of spatial analysis, energy planning, and data engineering—developing platforms and workflows that enable teams to make better decisions about where and how to expand energy access.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain the organization's geospatial data environment, consolidating electrification plans, grid maps, demographic layers, socioeconomic datasets, and mobility data across multiple African markets
• Develop geospatial databases with strong emphasis on data quality, consistency, and accessibility for cross-functional teams
• Integrate proprietary operational data (sales performance, distribution networks, customer locations, asset positions) into GIS platforms
• Streamline GIS workflows and develop custom scripts to improve processing speed and analytical efficiency
• Collaborate with Data and BI teams to incorporate GIS outputs into company dashboards and planning tools using platforms like Tableau or Power BI
• Build or coordinate interactive web-based visualization platforms combining demographic, economic, and infrastructure data for internal and external stakeholders
• Partner with software development teams to integrate GIS data and market potential models into mobile applications for field operations
• Present complex spatial insights to non-technical teams in clear, actionable formats
• Enable internal teams to effectively apply geospatial tools in their day-to-day work
• Coordinate relationships with external GIS partners, research institutions, and data providers

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Energy Planning, or related field
• Demonstrated experience applying GIS within the energy sector, including electrification planning, grid expansion modeling, or off-grid market assessments
• Proficiency with open-source and/or commercial GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent enterprise systems for modeling, data management, and spatial analysis
• Experience automating workflows using scripting languages, preferably Python (GeoPandas and related libraries)
• Working knowledge of visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau for incorporating spatial insights into organizational dashboards
• Familiarity with African electrification and development datasets, including grid maps, electrification models, census data, night-time lights, demographic surveys (DHS, LSMS), and national energy plans
• Experience contributing to end-to-end GIS systems aligned with broader organizational workflows, including exposure to cloud-based data pipelines and APIs (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
• Strong ability to work across teams and translate spatial insights into clear, usable outputs
• Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to use maps to convey engaging narratives
• Comfortable working remotely in a multicultural environment with teams across different geographies
