Engineering Manager (w/m/d)

Our talent team is representing a confidential SaaS organization transforming public sector operations through AI-powered automation. This is a unique opportunity to lead an engineering team that's pioneering AI-first development practices while delivering measurable impact for government agencies across Germany.

We're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5 engineers in a hands-on leadership role. You'll drive both the technical excellence and cultural transformation needed to scale AI-assisted development, where the majority of production code is generated by AI agents under human guidance.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of 5 engineers with both technical and people management responsibilities, providing regular feedback and fostering individual growth
• Champion the shift to AI-first development practices, establishing workflows where AI agents generate the majority of production code under human direction and control
• Remain hands-on with architecture decisions and complex technical challenges, contributing directly to product development
• Partner with the Product Manager in a dual leadership model to drive value-focused prioritization
• Ensure reliable delivery, system stability, availability, and strategic reduction of technical debt within your domain
• Develop team capabilities proactively through structured learning and development initiatives
• Collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, Senior Software Architects, and the Head of Development
• Drive recruiting and onboarding efforts for new team members
• Take full ownership of what your team delivers, maintaining high standards for quality and impact

What We're Looking For

Required Experience & Skills:

• Several years of experience in both disciplinary and technical leadership of engineering teams
• Strong technical understanding at the architecture level with ability to contribute hands-on value
• Deep experience with TypeScript and Vue3 for frontend, Python for backend
• Clear perspective on AI-first development: you can effectively steer, orchestrate, and control AI agents to generate the majority of code while humans own direction, architecture, and quality standards
• Experience with modern cloud and container infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and "you build it, you run it" culture
• Strong people and culture skills: empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and ability to build sustainable trust
• Experience with situational leadership, adapting your style to team maturity and context
• Ownership mindset with accountability for team deliverables
• Change leadership and pioneer spirit: questioning the status quo, experimenting boldly, and inspiring others through transformation
• German language proficiency at native or C2 level
• Enjoyment of staying close to both team and code, with direct and personal leadership approach

Preferred Experience:

• Experience in the public sector or with B2G products
• Background building or scaling engineering organizations in startup or scale-up environments
