Engineering Manager

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization that has experienced significant growth over the past five years. Our client is now building out their engineering leadership team and needs an experienced Engineering Manager to focus on people development, performance management, and team health across a growing engineering organization.

This is a genuine people leadership role based in Belfast on a hybrid basis. You'll manage approximately 12 engineers across three product teams, with room for continued growth. This isn't a tech lead position with some management added on—it's a dedicated engineering management role where your primary focus is developing and supporting engineers.

Responsibilities

You'll own the people side of engineering management while working alongside technical leads who handle architectural decisions:

• Manage engineers across multiple product teams through regular one-to-ones, coaching, and clear feedback
• Make expectations clear and help engineers understand what good performance looks like at each level
• Identify performance issues early and handle difficult conversations when needed
• Support career progression from junior through senior levels and beyond
• Own and improve the engineering performance and progression framework
• Review and refine career levels, expectations, and review processes
• Make promotion decisions that are consistent, evidence-based, and well-understood
• Lead engineering hiring alongside technical leads, maintaining a high hiring bar
• Ensure new engineers have structured and effective onboarding experiences
• Monitor team health, engagement, retention, and collaboration across the engineering organization
• Help maintain strong remote engineering culture as the company scales
• Stay technically informed enough to understand the work, follow engineering discussions, and ask good questions

What We're Looking For

We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager rather than someone taking their first step into management:

• Previous experience directly managing software engineers across more than one team or product area
• Strong track record of developing engineers at different career stages
• Hands-on experience managing performance, including underperformance situations
• Experience making promotion and progression decisions
• Previous experience running or improving engineering career frameworks and review cycles
• Experience hiring software engineers and building effective interview processes
• Engineering background sufficient to understand code and contribute to technical conversations
• Judgment to know when to get involved versus when to leave decisions with technical leads
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in remote environments
• Practical understanding of how AI tools are changing software engineering
• Experience with Ruby or Rails is useful but not essential

Technical context: You should be comfortable working around a modern web stack including Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, React, and contemporary deployment tooling. You won't spend most of your time writing production code, but you need enough technical depth to understand the work and participate intelligently in engineering discussions.

Location: This role is fully remote within the UK or Ireland, with hybrid access to a Belfast office for those who want to use it.

Pay
