About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-scaling global nonprofit client approaching $1 billion in annual operations, with ambitious plans to reach $5 billion per year. Our client delivers direct cash assistance to millions of people living in poverty across multiple countries, and they need a Chief Technology Officer to architect and lead the technology transformation that will enable sustained growth at unprecedented scale.

This is a rare executive opportunity to build software systems that safely move billions of dollars to vulnerable populations in some of the world's highest-need regions. You'll lead engineering, data, security, and enterprise technology for an organization tackling complex technical challenges: identity verification and fraud management, machine learning on imperfect datasets (mobile data, satellite imagery, government registries), mobile money integrations, low-connectivity environments, and rapidly evolving requirements across diverse regulatory contexts.

The role is remote with working hours between US Eastern Time and East African Time. Our client has office hubs in New York, London, and Nairobi, with preference for candidates in those locations.

Responsibilities

• Define technology vision and strategy: Own the technical roadmap for a $5B+ annual operation, including architecture decisions, platform choices, build-vs-buy evaluations, and legacy system retirement plans
• Lead a complex portfolio: Balance six critical workstreams including building a new cash delivery stack with remote verification and fraud prevention, stabilizing legacy systems during migration, donor-facing fundraising products, emergency cash systems, enterprise technology, and cybersecurity
• Build the technology organization: Grow the engineering team from approximately 15 to 30+ talented engineers, designing organizational structure, accountability frameworks, and career paths that sustain high performance
• Set technical direction and quality standards: Guide major decisions on integrations, data architecture, security protocols, and reliability engineering while maintaining pragmatic quality standards appropriate for high-stakes financial delivery
• Serve as executive team member: Report to the CEO, partner with the VP Product, and work cross-functionally with program, finance, risk, and country leaders to translate business strategy into technical investments
• Travel internationally: Approximately 4–6 trips annually to countries of operation

What We're Looking For

• Exceptional people leader: Proven track record hiring, developing, and retaining excellent engineers and engineering leaders, with team processes that consistently deliver quality software at velocity
• Deep technical judgment: Ability to evaluate major designs, pressure-test architecture decisions, and recognize when teams are heading off course—without becoming the primary implementer. Low-ego approach that allows you to investigate problems directly when needed
• Business acumen and decisiveness: Strong executive presence with the ability to navigate complex tradeoffs involving long vs. short term priorities, speed, reliability, security, cost, technical quality, and user impact
• AI-first mindset: Clear point of view on where AI meaningfully improves engineering productivity and organizational capability, with demonstrated experience moving teams from experimentation to measured, production use of AI tools
• Values alignment: Ability to embody and promote a culture of candor, analytical rigor, high ownership, and non-hierarchical collaboration

Advantageous experience (not required):

• Operationally complex or regulated domains such as fintech, payments, humanitarian response, or global development
• Systems involving financial controls, fraud risk, identity management, or sensitive recipient data
• Operating across multiple countries, particularly lower-income or infrastructure-constrained environments
• Leading both modern product engineering and enterprise technology functions

Pay

Pay via Get A Job.ai will depend on your location:

• US-based: Total compensation of $366,000 – $518,000 (base salary $300,000 – $375,000 plus performance bonus and benefits stipend)
• UK-based: Total compensation of £225,000 – £317,000 (base salary £193,400 – £241,700 plus performance bonus and benefits stipend)
• Kenya-based: Total compensation of $333,000 – $467,000 (base salary $282,500 – $353,100 plus performance bonus and benefits stipend)

For candidates in other locations, compensation benchmarks will be provided during the hiring process. Our client uses a no-negotiation policy to ensure pay equity across comparable roles.
