About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential manufacturing organization in a search for a Chief Information Security Officer - Product & Embedded Systems based in Hampton, VA. This is a strategic leadership role focused on defining and implementing cybersecurity strategy across product development activities, with particular emphasis on high-speed connectivity solutions and embedded systems used in data center environments.
The position addresses cybersecurity risks throughout the full product lifecycle—from concept through deployment and sustainment—operating at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and system-level architecture.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead product cybersecurity strategy aligned with business objectives and customer requirements for high-speed connectivity products
- Establish cybersecurity policies, standards, and secure design principles for hardware, firmware, and embedded software
- Integrate cybersecurity into all phases of New Product Introduction (NPI) and enforce secure coding standards, threat modeling, and design reviews
- Conduct product-level threat modeling and risk assessments across embedded firmware, ASIC/FPGA interfaces, high-speed data paths, and external interfaces
- Establish processes for static and dynamic code analysis, penetration testing, and firmware/hardware security validation
- Define cybersecurity requirements for suppliers of ICs, firmware, and software components; assess third-party components for security risks
- Collaborate with system architects to design secure communication protocols, implement encryption/authentication, and ensure secure boot and firmware integrity
- Develop and maintain product cybersecurity incident response plans and support investigation of field incidents
- Ensure products meet relevant cybersecurity regulations and standards; support audits, certifications, and customer security assessments
- Drive cybersecurity awareness and training across engineering and product teams
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field
- 10+ years in cybersecurity with strong emphasis on embedded systems and/or hardware-integrated products
- Proven experience implementing secure development lifecycle practices
- Deep technical expertise in embedded systems security (firmware, RTOS, low-level software)
- Strong knowledge of hardware security (ASICs, FPGAs, side-channel risks, secure elements)
- Experience with cryptography, secure boot, authentication protocols, and network security in high-speed systems
- Proficiency with vulnerability assessment tools and penetration testing methods
- Knowledge of secure development lifecycle frameworks and zero trust architecture concepts
- Familiarity with relevant standards including ISO/IEC 27001, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST SP 800-53, SOC 2 Type II, and ANSI/TIA-942
- Strong cross-functional leadership skills and ability to influence design decisions
- Excellent communication skills for both technical and executive audiences
- Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced dynamic environment
- Willingness to travel approximately 30%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in high-speed electronics, data center infrastructure, or networking products
- Knowledge of data center architecture and high-speed connectivity products
- Background in product development for data center applications
