Backend Developer – Laravel / AWS (m/f/x) in Berlin

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing booking platform in the experiences sector, operating across multiple European markets. Our client is a lean, product-focused organization with ambitious technical goals and a collaborative engineering culture.

They are looking for a backend engineer to join a small team of four, working directly with design and product leadership. This is a hands-on role with genuine technical ownership—not a ticket queue. You'll shape architecture, build features end to end, and have a direct impact on platform evolution.

Responsibilities

• Own backend features from initial analysis through deployment and monitoring, including partner-facing booking software
• Shape system architecture by identifying bottlenecks, proposing solutions, and implementing them
• Work across service boundaries, data models, queues, integrations, and performance optimization
• Improve monitoring and proactively address technical debt
• Use AI tooling as a core part of your workflow, including work outside your primary specialization
• Think critically about requirements and identify edge cases early based on production experience
• Collaborate actively in daily standups, planning sessions, and technical discussions—sharing blockers early and contributing your perspective

What We're Looking For

• Several years of production backend experience, ideally with PHP/Laravel, with a track record of building systems that others still maintain
• Strong, reasoned opinions about architecture backed by having lived with the consequences of past technical decisions
• Solid hands-on experience with AWS services: Lambda, SQS, EC2, ECS/Fargate, CloudFront, and Bedrock
• Comfort owning what you ship in production environments
• Real fluency with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or Cursor—you already work this way daily
• A maker mindset: preference for building over documentation
• The confidence to challenge existing approaches, the respect to understand their origins, and the honesty to admit knowledge gaps
• Based in or willing to relocate to Berlin with an office-first working style
