Role Overview

As a Bioinformatics Analyst II at Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry, you will support research and clinical projects that depend on sophisticated data analysis, sequence processing, and computational biology methodologies. Core Duties

  • Analyze genomic, proteomic, and other high-throughput datasets using established bioinformatics workflows and tools
  • Process and interpret next-generation sequencing (NGS) data from various platforms and applications
  • Develop and maintain computational pipelines for data quality control, alignment, variant calling, and annotation
  • Collaborate with research scientists, clinicians, and laboratory teams to translate analytical needs into technical solutions
  • Document methods, validate results, and ensure reproducibility across projects and analyses
  • Troubleshoot bioinformatics tools, databases, and infrastructure issues to maintain research continuity
  • Prepare data summaries, visualizations, and reports for research publications and stakeholder presentations

Who We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical sciences, or related field (master's preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux/Unix command-line environments and scripting (Python, Perl, Bash, or similar)
  • Hands-on familiarity with NGS analysis tools and reference data (GATK, SAMtools, alignment software, annotation databases)
  • Strong understanding of molecular biology, genomics, and statistical principles underlying sequence analysis
  • Ability to work independently on well-defined projects while collaborating within a cross-functional team
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills to translate complex analyses for diverse audiences
  • Problem-solving mindset and commitment to data quality and scientific rigor
