Rust Engineering Lead – Linux and Open Source

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking Rust Engineering Leads at multiple seniority levels. This is a fully remote role open to candidates anywhere in the world. Our client is investing heavily in Rust adoption across their platform stack—from system firmware and bootloaders through kernel components and desktop environments.

As a Rust Engineering Lead, you'll drive language adoption across critical infrastructure projects, advocate for Rust in upstream open-source communities, and help rethink Linux system foundations with modern, safe systems programming.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and document production-quality Rust software for Linux systems
• Champion Rust adoption within the organization and broader open-source ecosystem
• Identify and prioritize legacy codebases for Rust migration
• Debug and resolve complex issues reported by end users
• Participate in code reviews, architectural design sessions, and technical specifications
• Deploy and operate distributed services developed by your team (for senior roles)
• Collaborate with global engineering teams and open-source communities
• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices and tooling
• Engage in technical advocacy to support product success

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Exceptional academic background in Computer Science or STEM disciplines, or equivalent compelling experience
• Strong professional experience designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux
• Deep passion for and hands-on experience with Linux at the system level (multiple distributions preferred)
• For senior positions: proven experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs
• Self-starting, well-organized individual capable of delivering to schedule in a fully remote environment
• Track record of exceeding expectations and going above-and-beyond
• Professional written and spoken English communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively across cultures and time zones
• Result-oriented mindset with strong personal accountability
• Ability to travel internationally twice per year for team meetings (up to two weeks each)

Nice to Have:

• Experience with containerization, orchestration, and IoT platforms
• Background in performance engineering and security
• Contributions to major open-source projects
• Familiarity with Python, Go, C, C++, React, or Flutter
