Software Engineering Director

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking an experienced Software Engineering Director to lead multiple engineering teams across global time zones. This is a fully remote position open to candidates worldwide.

Our client is a pioneering firm in the open-source ecosystem, building large-scale software products used by millions globally. You'll manage engineering managers and staff engineers, setting technical direction and driving operational excellence across distributed teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead and scale multiple engineering teams, from graduate to senior-level engineers
• Develop engineering managers through coaching, mentoring, and career development
• Hire and retain staff-level engineers for specialized roles in performance, quality, and security
• Establish and defend disciplined engineering processes while maintaining team health metrics
• Set benchmark goals for team speed, efficiency, and delivery quality
• Represent engineering products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
• Collaborate with leadership team and adjacent product leads on strategic initiatives
• Ensure comprehensive delivery including documentation, community engagement, and testing standards
• Drive continual improvement in engineering and organizational practices

What We're Looking For

• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM field (or equivalent demonstrable experience)
• Extensive management experience leading engineering managers and technical teams
• Outstanding software engineering track record, particularly in Linux-based environments
• Deep expertise in one or more domains: Python, Golang, C/C++, Rust, JavaScript/TypeScript/React, Flutter, systems programming, web services, kernel development, or embedded systems
• Proven ability to set and maintain high performance standards while building trust
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including public speaking
• Demonstrated passion for developing people and growing technical talent
• Strong organizational skills with ability to deliver results on schedule
• Experience working in agile development environments
• Result-oriented mindset with commitment to meeting objectives
• Ability to travel internationally twice yearly for team events (up to two weeks each)

Valued additional experience: Open-source community leadership, developer advocacy, systems administration, performance engineering, or security expertise.

Pay
