Ubuntu Security Engineer

Overview

We are representing a confidential open source software organization in their search for an Ubuntu Security Engineer. Our client is a globally distributed technology company working at the forefront of enterprise computing, cloud infrastructure, and emerging technologies. This is a fully remote position open to candidates worldwide.

As part of a dedicated security engineering team, you will monitor, triage, and respond to vulnerabilities across open source ecosystems. This engineering-focused role involves analyzing code, developing fixes, building security tools, and collaborating with both internal teams and the broader open source community to protect users from emerging threats.

International travel is required at least twice annually for team collaboration sessions.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in open source software packages
• Track and document vulnerabilities as they are discovered, researched, and remediated
• Collaborate with upstream developers and community members to exchange or develop vulnerability patches
• Conduct source code audits to identify security weaknesses
• Build features and internal tools that strengthen product security
• Engage in coordinated disclosure practices with security researchers and vendors
• Participate in code reviews and security assessments
• Contribute to industry security initiatives and community events

What We're Looking For

• Thorough understanding of common security vulnerability categories and remediation techniques
• Familiarity with coordinated disclosure practices and responsible vulnerability handling
• Experience with open source development tools and methodologies
• Proficiency in one or more of: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/TypeScript
• Strong experience with Linux systems (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
• Excellent logic, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities
• Clear and effective communication skills for distributed collaboration
• Self-discipline and self-motivation for remote work success
• Curiosity, flexibility, and accountability in a fast-paced environment
• Comfort working across multiple cultures and time zones
• Result-oriented mindset with commitment to meeting deadlines
