ML Research Engineer

Responsibilities

Our client, a well-funded AI safety organization, is seeking an ML Research Engineer to join their team in Paris. In this role, you will:

• Transform large volumes of unstructured text data into structured, explorable views including topics, clusters, segments, trends, and anomalies
• Build and maintain scalable representation pipelines covering sampling, preprocessing, embeddings at scale, indexing, and retrieval
• Leverage LLMs for labeling, weak supervision, data enrichment, and automated diagnostics while managing cost and quality tradeoffs
• Translate analytical findings into actionable product and operational decisions
• Ship self-serve datasets, data models, and dashboards for internal stakeholders
• Collaborate with engineering and research teams to ensure pipelines meet production constraints around latency, cost, and privacy

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL with proven experience building production-grade ML pipelines beyond notebook prototypes
• Applied NLP/ML experience working with real-world text data: embeddings, clustering, topic modeling, semantic search, and classification
• Demonstrated ability to work at scale with distributed processing, large-scale storage and querying, and performance-cost optimization
• Experience evaluating ambiguous problems using offline/online metrics, human-in-the-loop labeling, inter-annotator agreement, and drift monitoring
• Background working with safety or moderation datasets, policy/rule systems, or high-volume logging and observability platforms
• Willingness to relocate to Paris and work in a hybrid environment

Bonus qualifications include:

• Public portfolio of open-source models, datasets, frameworks, research papers, or technical writing
• Experience at an AI research lab or with open-source model releases
• Knowledge of reinforcement learning for LLMs beyond standard RLHF approaches
• Experience building moderation, safety, or classification models at scale, particularly multilingual systems
