Machine Learning Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential decision intelligence organization based in London that operates at the intersection of curated data, artificial intelligence, and strategic analysis. Our client serves both public and private sector organizations navigating complex geopolitical environments.

We are seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join their growing team. This role is available at both mid and senior levels, with scope and autonomy scaling according to experience. Senior candidates will lead technical direction on major initiatives and mentor team members, while mid-level candidates will own significant components end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design and architect agentic systems for large-scale analytical workflows
• Partner with software engineering and product teams to understand requirements and design model evaluations
• Train and evaluate domain-specific models tailored to unique intelligence problems
• Integrate optimized ML workflows into production pipelines and ensure reliability at scale
• Take projects from prototype through to reliable production deployment
• Make technical decisions on model selection, training approaches, evaluation methodologies and deployment strategies
• Establish high standards for architecture, code quality, evaluation rigor and research practices
• Collaborate with domain experts to translate research into practical analyst-facing solutions
• Deliver production-ready systems that balance research velocity with real-world constraints

What We're Looking For

• Demonstrated technical excellence through production systems at scale, applied research, or end-to-end ownership in early-stage environments
• Hands-on experience with model serving for both small models and LLMs
• Practical knowledge of agent orchestration and retrieval systems
• Strong engineering fundamentals with ability to write clean, maintainable code and design robust systems
• Rigorous approach to evaluation and benchmarking
• Comfort operating in fast-paced environments with clear ownership expectations
• Experience with modern coding agents and thoughtful perspectives on effective workflows

Nice to Have:

• Early-stage startup experience
• Background building agentic tools and testing harnesses
• Experience with domain-specific modeling challenges
• Clear writing skills, systematic thinking and strong communication abilities

Pay

Compensation will be competitive and based on skills and experience. Our client offers a generous benefits package including private medical insurance, enhanced pension contributions, enhanced parental leave, workplace nursery scheme, £500 annual education budget (with manager approval for larger items like conferences), and 33 days of leave inclusive of bank holidays. The team typically works from their central London office two days per week with flexibility for additional office time.
