About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential fusion energy organization in Munich that is scaling its plasma physics simulation capabilities. We are seeking a Plasma Microwave Modelling Physicist specializing in ECRH and gyrotron systems to own the complete physics simulation pipeline connecting microwave heating sources to plasma performance outcomes.
This is a full-time position based in Munich, Germany. The role requires on-site collaboration with physics and engineering teams working on stellarator optimization and advanced magnet systems.
Responsibilities
- Execute ray-tracing and beam-tracing simulations of electron cyclotron wave propagation and absorption using established codes including TRAVIS, RAYTRAX, TORBEAM, C3PO, IPF-FD3D, or similar specialized tools
- Develop an integrated modeling framework that couples wave deposition physics to transport codes, enabling systematic optimization of temperature and density profiles
- Build and maintain Python-based post-processing pipelines to automate scenario scanning, data visualization, and integration with broader design frameworks
- Model Electron Cyclotron Current Drive (ECCD) effects and assess impact on rotational transform and equilibrium in quasi-isodynamic configurations
- Validate simulation results against experimental data from reference stellarator facilities
- Contribute to design reviews, interface control documents, and technical reports ensuring all simulation outputs are traceable and actionable for engineering teams
What We're Looking For
- PhD in plasma physics, applied physics, or a related field, with demonstrated focus on plasma-wave interactions or RF heating of magnetically confined plasmas (or equivalent research-level expertise)
- Hands-on experience with at least one EC propagation or absorption code such as TRAVIS, TORBEAM, C3PO, IPF-FD3D, or equivalent tools used in fusion research
- Proficiency in Python for simulation scripting, data analysis, and scientific visualization
- Comfort reading and modifying legacy Fortran or C/C++ code bases commonly used in plasma physics simulation
- Systems-thinking approach: ability to translate complex physics outputs into engineering requirements and hardware constraints
- Strong collaborative skills across physics and engineering disciplines, including experience working with external academic partners
- Eligibility to work in Germany; visa sponsorship details can be discussed during the recruitment process
