Senior Backend Engineer – Commercial Systems and Intelligence

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in Berlin, Germany, seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join a newly formed team focused on commercial systems and intelligence. This is a greenfield opportunity to build the infrastructure that powers merchant attribution, commission automation, and lifecycle analytics from the ground up.

You'll work at the intersection of data engineering, backend services, and sales operations, creating systems that replace manual workflows with auditable, scalable automation. This role offers the rare chance to establish architectural patterns, data models, and engineering standards for a team just getting started.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data across the ecosystem to determine which acquisition channels or agents drove merchant actions including signups and product adoption
• Design and implement data models, API contracts, and rule engines that automate commission workflows for field sales, telesales, partnerships, and referral programs
• Build a centralized Lifecycle Event Log storing curated merchant events used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales functions
• Develop internal tools and APIs enabling sales teams to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Define API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns that other engineering teams can adopt with confidence
• Establish testing, observability, and incident response best practices for the squad
• Leverage AI and coding tools strategically to scaffold services, write tests, and draft documentation while maintaining accountability for production code

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience in Go, or proficiency in typed languages with readiness to ramp up quickly
• Proven experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Fluency in relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) with sound judgment on architectural trade-offs
• Hands-on experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems and understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where traceability matters—fintech, payments, or similar regulated domains strongly preferred
• Experience building services from scratch in greenfield squads with minimal prior context, energized rather than unsettled by ambiguity
• Track record treating testing, observability, and incident response as first-class engineering concerns
• Resourcefulness and adaptability with end-to-end ownership mentality, able to do more with less as priorities shift
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating ambiguous problems into clear engineering work
• Pragmatic decision-making knowing when "good enough" ships value and when rigor is genuinely required
• Mentorship instincts and commitment to raising the bar for teammates, not just individual output
