Technical Lead (Platform)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing fintech organization that builds production-ready AI systems for financial institutions across the UK. Our client has been recognized with multiple industry awards and is backed by leading investors, working with major banks and building societies to transform how regulated financial services firms operate.

We're seeking an experienced Technical Lead to take ownership of the core platform services that underpin their product suite. This is a senior, hands-on engineering role with responsibility for architecture, quality, and operational reliability of the foundational systems their product teams depend on. You'll lead the technical direction of a team of six to seven engineers while remaining close to the code, making architectural decisions, setting engineering standards, and developing talent.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical architecture and direction of core platform services built on AWS
• Design and build scalable, event-driven services supporting regulated financial institutions
• Develop client-data ingestion capabilities, enabling onboarding through configuration rather than bespoke engineering
• Build and maintain APIs providing consistent access to client and CRM data
• Design robust multi-tenant systems with strong data isolation, security, and operational controls
• Lead data lifecycle management approaches, including retention, deletion, residency, and GDPR requirements
• Build resilient integrations with third-party platforms, handling authentication, rate limiting, retries, and failure recovery
• Make and document architectural decisions, representing the team in Architecture Review Board discussions
• Raise engineering standards across testing, observability, security, reliability, and operational ownership
• Remain hands-on with production code, primarily in Node.js and AWS environments
• Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, design discussions, and technical coaching
• Guide effective use of AI-assisted engineering tools while maintaining strong engineering judgment

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Significant software engineering experience with a strong track record of technical leadership and architectural decision-making
• Deep production experience with Node.js, particularly across backend, API, and distributed systems
• Strong experience designing and operating cloud-native systems on AWS
• Experience building event-driven architectures and understanding challenges of asynchronous distributed systems
• Experience designing production systems with complex multi-tenancy, data isolation, or data lifecycle requirements
• Strong experience integrating with third-party APIs and designing for rate limits, partial failures, retries, and reconciliation
• Strong understanding of reliability, observability, security, and operational ownership
• Experience making architectural trade-offs and communicating technical decisions clearly
• Track record of mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards
• Ability and desire to remain hands-on while providing technical direction

Desirable:

• Production experience with Python alongside Node.js
• Experience with identity and access management technologies such as Auth0 or AWS Cognito
• Strong understanding of OAuth 2.0 and authentication/authorization patterns
• Experience building software within financial services or regulated environments
• Experience handling data residency, retention, and GDPR erasure requirements at scale
• Experience contributing to Architecture Review Boards or technical governance forums
• Experience establishing or improving AI-assisted software engineering practices

Our client is looking for someone who hasn't moved completely away from engineering—you'll still design systems, review code, solve difficult technical problems, and contribute to production software while creating leverage by helping engineers around you make better decisions and take greater ownership.
