Senior Scientist, LPI Modeling & Beam Smoothing (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential fusion energy organization based in Germany. They are seeking a Senior Scientist to lead critical work in laser-plasma interaction modeling and beam smoothing—a role that bridges laser system capabilities with target physics requirements.

This position offers the opportunity to serve as a scientific anchor for beam smoothing initiatives while providing theoretical and simulation expertise across multiple research teams. You'll work on cutting-edge fusion energy technology, translating complex physics requirements into actionable engineering specifications.

Responsibilities

• Provide theoretical and simulation support for beam smoothing projects
• Coordinate laser beam requirements, including picket and drive beam design and beam port architecture
• Support the technical roadmap in partnership with diagnostics and physics teams
• Deliver theoretical support for implementation in radiation-hydrodynamics code development
• Provide expertise for laser-plasma interaction science across experiments and simulations
• Collaborate closely with beam smoothing, laser, target design, and target physics teams on risk mitigation and hydrodynamic instabilities
• Design and interpret experimental results in collaboration with cross-functional teams

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in plasma physics or equivalent field
• 10+ years of post-doctoral or staff scientist experience
• Strong theoretical and simulation knowledge of beam smoothing techniques
• Deep theoretical knowledge of laser-plasma interactions (CBET, SBS, SRS, and/or TPD) with experience in PIC/fluid simulations
• Expertise in High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments
• Excellent programming skills for HPC (OpenMP/MPI) in C++ and/or Python or equivalent languages
• Strong mathematical background including linear algebra, dynamical systems, partial differential equations, stochastic differential equations, and numerical modeling
• Solid foundation in laser fusion science
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical teams
• Strong capabilities in prioritization, problem-solving, and adaptability

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience designing or interpreting laser-plasma interaction or radiation-hydrodynamics experiments
• Knowledge of imprint requirements
• Familiarity with radiation-hydrodynamics physics and simulations
• Background in laser science and optics
• Team leadership experience
