Senior Data Scientist – Business Operations

We are representing a confidential technology-driven marketplace organization in their search for a Senior Data Scientist - Business Operations based in London (hybrid, minimum three days per week in office).

Our client operates at the intersection of commerce, logistics, and technology, delivering complex operational intelligence that drives decision-making across global markets. This role sits within their Business Operations analytics function—a team that acts as the pulse of business performance, transforming raw data into actionable intelligence for executives and functional leaders.

Responsibilities

This is a largely project-based role where you will own delivery end-to-end, from ambiguous strategic questions to rigorous, trustworthy answers:

• Maintain continuous business performance intelligence: Monitor performance against goals, identify changes, compare to expectations, and forecast what comes next. Go deeper to understand why it's happening, what matters most, and what actions to take
• Own delivery independently: Identify, define, and deliver impactful analytical work aligned with business goals, operating with minimal guidance to ship fast, high-quality solutions
• Navigate ambiguity and complexity: Deconstruct broad problem spaces into structured analytical roadmaps, understanding how your work intersects with adjacent systems and teams
• Build scalable analytical infrastructure: Create pipelines, models, dashboards, monitoring systems, and investigative tooling that make performance visible and reliable. Automate wherever possible to avoid repetitive manual work
• Design rigorous measurement strategies: Utilize A/B testing and quasi-experimental designs (synthetic control, difference-in-differences, event studies) when traditional trials aren't feasible, always communicating with conservative, assumption-explicit language
• Act as a first responder: Surface performance deviations before they escalate, and confidently distinguish signal from noise
• Communicate to influence decisions: Translate complex findings into clear, actionable recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences that shape strategic roadmaps
• Contribute to analytical excellence: Improve shared approaches, best practices, and help build data literacy across the organization

What We're Looking For

We're seeking candidates with strong expertise in several of these areas and curiosity to grow in others:

• Experience in analytical or data science roles such as data analytics, data science, forecasting, planning, or strategy analytics. Background in logistics, e-commerce, marketplaces, or fast-moving, customer-focused businesses is valuable but not required
• Proficiency with SQL and a scripting language such as Python or R, alongside experience with BI or visualization tools such as Looker, Tableau, or similar platforms
• Comfortable using modern AI-assisted tools to work efficiently while maintaining high standards of accuracy and reproducibility
• Pragmatic problem-solving approach: ability to balance analytical rigor with speed, adapt methods to decision importance, and focus effort where it will have greatest impact
• Effective problem decomposition: take ambiguous questions, identify underlying problems or decisions, develop hypotheses, and use data and business context to reach clear conclusions
• Experience with experimentation and/or causal inference is a strong plus, enabling you to unpick insights and steer strategic decisions
• Excellent communication skills—in person, in writing, and in code—with ability to translate business needs into analytical problems and complex findings into simple recommendations
• Driven, hard-working, and agile mindset suited to fast-paced, high-growth environments
• London-based with minimum three days per week in office (hybrid)

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive within the London market for senior data science roles. Our client offers equity participation alongside base salary.
