Staff Software Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential food-delivery technology organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer for their London office (hybrid, 3 days on-site). In this role, you will drive technical excellence and strategic direction across high-impact engineering initiatives.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Act as a technical authority: Provide high-level architecture reviews and technical guidance across multiple engineering teams, ensuring alignment on complex, ambiguous challenges.
• Design and architect scalable solutions: Define technical approaches for critical business problems in a high-traffic environment handling 20,000+ requests per minute.
• Lead strategic technical direction: Influence the long-term technical roadmap, manage project timelines and risks, and establish sustainable delivery practices.
• Mentor and develop engineering talent: Support the growth of engineers at all levels and partner with emerging leaders to strengthen the engineering culture.
• Shape the team: Lead technical interviews and contribute to recruiting strategy to maintain a high bar for engineering talent.

What We're Looking For

Our client seeks a candidate with deep technical expertise and the ability to lead at scale:

• Extensive experience building web-based applications: Significant background developing and scaling web applications, with a focus on readable, well-tested software.
• Polyglot programming skills: Proficiency in or willingness to learn languages such as Go, Ruby, Python, Scala, or Rust.
• Distributed systems expertise: Practical experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL backends including Redis, DynamoDB, or Elasticsearch.
• High-scale architecture experience: Proven ability to design and operate systems handling massive request volumes and complex workflows in production environments.
• Strategic leadership capabilities: Strong track record of aligning multiple teams and disciplines to resolve ambiguous technical challenges and deliver business impact.
• Technical mentorship: Experience coaching engineers and raising the technical bar across teams.
