Engineering Manager (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in their search for an Engineering Manager to join their Berlin office. Our client operates at the center of European payments infrastructure, processing high-volume transactions for e-commerce and retail businesses across multiple markets.

This is a leadership role within the core payment processing team—the engineers who build and maintain the systems that authorize, capture, and settle merchant transactions. You'll lead a cross-functional team that owns services end-to-end, working under strict reliability and compliance requirements while incorporating AI into tooling and payment flows.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of experienced engineers, including ownership of hiring, performance management, and career development
• Take accountability for delivery, quality, and reliability of one or more product areas, balancing technical and business priorities
• Partner with product management and stakeholders to shape roadmaps, plan capacity, and ensure predictable delivery
• Drive continuous improvement of engineering practices, tooling, and processes while removing blockers for your team
• Contribute to technical and architectural direction, ensuring sound decisions while empowering engineers to own implementation details
• Remain hands-on when needed, contributing to the codebase, troubleshooting complex issues, and supporting the team with technical expertise

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or similar field, with substantial software engineering experience
• Prior people-management or tech-lead experience with proven ability to coach and develop engineers and build inclusive, motivated teams
• Strong technical grounding in Java, Kotlin, and/or JavaScript, plus experience with large-scale systems—sufficient to guide architecture and challenge technical decisions
• Familiarity with Agentic Software Engineering and AI-driven development lifecycles, and how to adopt them within a team context
• Deep understanding of Agile delivery, CI/CD pipelines, and quality practices
• Experience with cloud-based, containerized environments (Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS) is a plus
• Fluent English with excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills across teams and functions
• Valid work permit for Germany (visa sponsorship is not available for this role)
