Senior Engineering Manager Java

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization seeking a Senior Engineering Manager with deep Java expertise to lead critical product engineering initiatives in Bordeaux.

In this role, you will:

• Lead and develop two engineering squads (approximately 12 engineers total) responsible for seller experience and marketplace channel integrations, ensuring reliable delivery and maintaining a high engineering bar across both teams
• Partner closely with Product and Design leadership to define priorities, translate business requirements into execution plans, and make trade-offs that balance delivery velocity, quality, and technical sustainability
• Drive technical direction across your scope by challenging architectural choices, ensuring solutions are scalable and maintainable, and raising best practices in testing, observability, and incident management
• Develop your people through coaching engineers and tech leads, identifying growth opportunities, conducting performance and career conversations, and contributing to talent acquisition efforts
• Build a strong operating model for your teams by improving ways of working pragmatically, protecting team focus, fostering ownership, and enabling effective collaboration with distributed international stakeholders
• Manage delivery, priorities, and trade-offs across multiple teams simultaneously in a fast-moving environment

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• At least 4 to 5 years of experience managing engineering teams, with a proven track record of leading teams of 5 to 6 engineers or more, ideally across multiple squads
• Demonstrated experience in e-commerce, marketplaces, channel management, feed management, catalog management, or order management domains
• A solid Java background with the technical depth to challenge architectural decisions, assess technical trade-offs, and manage Java engineering teams with credibility (you may no longer be hands-on, but you understand the technology)
• Proven ability to deliver in demanding, fast-moving environments while protecting team focus and adapting management approaches to context
• Experience collaborating with international and cross-functional stakeholders across time zones

• Cloud platforms
• Microservices architecture

Essential Skills:

• Engineering leadership with ability to set direction, delegate effectively, and develop people at all levels
• Execution in complexity with capability to manage delivery, priorities, and trade-offs across multiple teams simultaneously
• Technical judgment to engage in Java architecture discussions, challenge integration design choices, and guide engineers on complex distributed systems
• Fluent English required (approximately 50% of working time will be in English) to lead discussions and collaborate autonomously with US-based and international partners
• Full professional proficiency in French required

Location: Based in Bordeaux office with one day of remote work per week. Teams are distributed between Paris and Bordeaux with close collaboration with US-based colleagues.
