Principal Engineer – Identity & Privacy

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential travel technology organization seeking a Principal Engineer to lead their Identity & Privacy function. This is a senior technical leadership position based in London (hybrid) where you'll shape the technical foundations that enable trust, personalization, and data-driven capabilities across consumer-facing products and platforms.

In this role, you'll own the technical strategy for identity, consent, and privacy engineering across web, mobile, backend services, data platforms, experimentation, analytics, advertising, and machine learning systems. You'll work at the intersection of traveler trust, product innovation, and regulatory compliance—translating complex privacy requirements into engineering practice at scale.

Responsibilities

• Define and communicate the long-term technical vision and roadmap for identity, consent, and privacy engineering, aligning with product strategy and business objectives
• Lead technical approach to purpose-scoped identifiers and consent-aware data processing across sessions, tracking, advertising, accounts, and derived identifiers
• Establish how identity and consent state flows from client surfaces through backend services, event streams, and data pipelines to downstream consumers
• Translate privacy principles and legal guidance into reusable engineering patterns, platform controls, decision frameworks, and measurable standards including retention, deletion, masking, access control, and auditability
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Legal, Privacy, Security, Data Governance, Data Science, Marketing, and Analytics teams to navigate trade-offs and create clarity
• Provide technical leadership for large-scale initiatives spanning consent platforms, privacy-safe experimentation, data retention and deletion, and trust features
• Use observability, engineering health metrics, and incident learnings to improve operational standards while coaching engineers and championing inclusive collaboration

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience translating privacy and data-protection requirements (GDPR, PECR, CCPA/CPRA or equivalent frameworks) into practical engineering decisions, working effectively with Legal, Privacy, Security, and Data Governance partners
• Track record designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems across identity, data platforms, consent, authentication, advertising technology, or customer data infrastructure
• Demonstrated ability leading significant technical change across multiple teams without direct line authority, creating alignment and momentum when ownership is distributed
• Strong technical judgment balancing product value, user trust, privacy requirements, operational reliability, and cost considerations
• End-to-end systems thinking across client surfaces, backend services, event streams, data products, ML features, analytics, partner integrations, and operational tooling
• Ability to turn policy into technical controls and measurable quality standards that teams can consistently implement in production systems
• Clear communication skills with ability to create shared engineering practices, write technical strategy, and work effectively with senior stakeholders across multiple functions
• Valuable but not essential: familiarity with privacy and consent technologies, experimentation platforms, personalization, advertising measurement, Databricks, OpenTelemetry, SQL, or practical experience using AI tools in engineering workflows
