HVAC Controls Systems Engineer

Jcifederal is hiring an HVAC Controls Systems Engineer to support our operations in Arlington, VA. This is a full-time position for an experienced engineer ready to design, troubleshoot, and optimize complex mechanical systems that keep buildings comfortable and efficient.

What This Role Involves

You'll take ownership of HVAC controls systems from concept through commissioning. Working with building automation platforms, control logic, and field instrumentation, you'll ensure climate systems operate reliably across multiple facilities. This role blends technical depth—programming, diagnostics, system integration—with problem-solving under real-world constraints.

Your Responsibilities

• Design and develop controls sequences for heating, cooling, and ventilation systems serving commercial and industrial buildings
• Program and configure building automation system (BAS) platforms, including PLC logic and field device integration
• Troubleshoot system faults, performance degradation, and sensor/actuator failures using diagnostic tools and engineering judgment
• Conduct equipment commissioning, functional testing, and performance verification to validate system design intent
• Document system configurations, control strategies, and operational procedures for handoff to facility teams
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers, contractors, and building operators to align controls design with project requirements
• Review equipment specifications and vendor documentation to inform control system architecture

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or HVAC systems technology (or equivalent practical experience)
• Demonstrated experience programming BAS platforms (Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, or equivalent)
• Working knowledge of HVAC equipment operation, thermodynamics, and psychrometrics
• Proficiency troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, or digital controls systems
• Familiarity with control strategies including reset logic, PID, staging, and demand-reset applications
• Strong technical communication skills; ability to create clear control narratives and system documentation
• Problem-solving mindset; comfort learning new platforms and adapting to field realities
