Platform Engineer (remote work)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential Linux infrastructure organization seeking a Platform Engineer to join their remote team in Spain. This role sits within the automation and management function, working on observability platforms, CI/CD infrastructure, and the automation systems that keep engineering teams productive.

You will take ownership of critical platform services—keeping them reliable, making changes repeatable, and reducing operational toil through automation and self-service. This is genuine platform engineering work: you choose your approach, defend it in review, and own the outcome.

Responsibilities

• Run and maintain the observability platform, managing cost, capacity, onboarding teams, and the alerting infrastructure built on top of it
• Operate the self-hosted GitLab instance and CI runner fleet, handling upgrades, capacity planning, access control, backups, and restore testing
• Keep platform services healthy with proper monitoring, runbooks, and documentation for production workloads
• Deploy new services from scratch: research options, design the solution, and stand it up as code with monitoring, backups, and documentation
• Handle requests from development teams—access, onboarding, pipeline troubleshooting, custom exporters and dashboards—and convert recurring requests into self-service capabilities
• Lead incident response: diagnose and mitigate, restore service safely, complete root-cause analysis and post-mortems, then deliver the improvements incidents demand
• Ship everything as infrastructure-as-code, reviewed in merge requests, planned and verified before every change
• Write clear technical documentation for engineers outside your team: runbooks, onboarding guides, maintenance notices, and status updates
• Work with AI engineering assistants to delegate tasks, review generated output as you would a colleague's merge request, and document learnings for the team

What We're Looking For

Must have:

• Senior-level experience in infrastructure, platform, or site reliability engineering, including production services you were responsible for keeping operational (be prepared to discuss what broke, how you detected it, and what you changed)
• Linux systems administration and debugging on bare metal and virtual machines—not just containerized environments
• Production Kubernetes delivered through GitOps, including hands-on experience performing cluster upgrades yourself
• Infrastructure-as-code discipline: Ansible and Terraform or OpenTofu, with changes reviewed in merge requests
• GitLab administration and GitLab CI in production (self-hosted or SaaS), or equivalently deep experience with another CI platform
• Working knowledge of Prometheus and Grafana: you have run it for a team, written alert rules and dashboards, and can read PromQL
• Strong written technical communication for engineering audiences: runbooks, notices, request responses
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills—this role involves as much collaboration with product teams as server work. You need to understand actual needs, negotiate scope and priority, push back diplomatically when needed, and keep everyone informed
• Advanced use of AI engineering assistants such as Claude: providing context, breaking down tasks, designing agent loops, delegating scoped work with clear stop conditions, and verifying generated commands and scripts before production use
• English at upper-intermediate level or higher for clear team communication

Nice to have:

• Alerting design experience: SLOs, burn-rate alerts, data-driven thresholds
• MicroVM isolation for CI: Kata Containers, Firecracker, or gVisor
• S3-compatible object storage operations: Ceph RGW or similar
• AWS with real cost optimization work
• Self-hosted Sentry or another Kafka, ClickHouse, and Redis-backed application you have operated under load
• Python or Go for writing exporters and small internal services

Solid fundamentals and the judgment to learn unfamiliar services, make them observable, and document their operation matter more than matching every technology on this list.

This role is not:

• A ticket-queue operator role—you turn recurring requests into self-service
• A pure cloud or Kubernetes position—bare metal and VMs are significant
• Database administration, network engineering, or security engineering—those teams manage their own systems
