About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential insurance technology organization in their search for a Lead AI Engineer. This is a systems leadership role focused on shaping AI strategy, architecture, and adoption across a customer-facing digital platform. You'll serve as the technical authority connecting engineering, product, and business leadership while making high-stakes decisions on platform selection, architectural patterns, and AI tooling standards.

This is not a people management position. You will own the technical vision and be accountable for build-vs-buy decisions, enterprise system architecture, and establishing AI engineering standards across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Define the AI engineering roadmap and architecture standards across the organization
  • Lead build vs. buy vs. integrate decision-making for AI systems and platforms, with clear accountability for how decisions are reached
  • Evaluate emerging tools, frameworks, and models; provide defensible recommendations to leadership
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for complex AI/ML system design challenges
  • Architect AI solutions for enterprise platforms undergoing active upgrade cycles, working comfortably across process and platform layers
  • Design systems for scale, reliability, and cost-efficiency in production environments
  • Establish LLMOps practices including evaluation suites, cost and quality observability, versioned prompts, staged rollout, and production guardrails
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to align AI capabilities with business outcomes
  • Translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences including executives
  • Champion AI-assisted coding practices and developer tooling across engineering teams
  • Define standards for responsible AI development including guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and security considerations

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with a meaningful portion in production AI/ML or LLM/GenAI systems
  • 2+ years building production LLM/GenAI and agentic systems with fluency in AI-assisted coding tooling
  • Demonstrated track record of redesigning existing business processes with AI at the core within enterprise environments, shipped to production
  • Production experience with agent orchestration, tool calling, RAG, and structured outputs
  • Sound judgment about appropriate AI use cases, distinguishing probabilistic systems from deterministic, auditable processes required in regulated environments
  • Experience making and communicating build vs. buy vs. integrate decisions at an organizational level
  • Proficiency in Python and the modern GenAI application stack including agent frameworks, model-provider SDKs, vector databases, and evaluation tooling
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to document architecture decisions and present to executive audiences

Preferred:

  • Direct evidence of legacy-process redesign with latitude to alter underlying platform architecture
  • Enterprise or regulated-domain experience, ideally in financial services or similar contexts
  • Experience in technical lead or principal engineer role with broad organizational influence
  • Background working with product engineering teams in dual-track agile environments
  • Experience with AI cost management, observability, and governance frameworks
