Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Data Streaming

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing workflow orchestration platform serving enterprise clients globally. Our client is building a foundational data streaming capability from the ground up, and we need a Senior Backend Engineer to help architect and deliver it.

This is a greenfield project with genuine technical ownership. You'll be part of a small team designing how process execution data streams out to customers and internal analytics products—decoupling data consumption from the live engine entirely. You'll work on durable streaming infrastructure, customer-facing integrations, and the analytics layer built on top of it. This role offers real influence over both architecture and team direction as the product matures.

Responsibilities

• Design and build core streaming infrastructure that decouples process data access from live execution, using durable, low-cost storage
• Develop customer-facing data streaming capabilities, including supported integrations with systems like Kafka
• Rebuild how analytics products consume and serve process data at scale, removing load from the execution engine's critical path
• Make foundational architecture decisions around consistency, durability, and distributed streaming pipelines in a small, high-ownership team
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, working with Support and SRE to investigate production data layer issues and feed insights back into the product
• Collaborate closely with Product, QA, Distributed Systems, and peer engineering teams to deliver and evolve the data streaming architecture

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience in Java, focused on distributed or data-intensive systems
• Hands-on experience with object storage systems (S3, GCS, Azure, or similar) and building reliable, idempotent upload/commit protocols
• Experience with Kafka or similar streaming/event-log systems
• Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals
• Proven track record driving technical initiatives through genuine ambiguity in systems still being designed
• Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end: solution design, project planning, cross-team coordination, and predictable delivery
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment, with ability to translate requirements into actionable work and provide clear feedback in code review

Nice to Have:

• Experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet, or lakehouse/data-lake architectures
• Experience with embedded state stores (RocksDB or similar) for projection/checkpointing workloads
• Experience with stream processing frameworks (Apache Flink), particularly stateful processing with local state backends and checkpointing
• Familiarity with object-storage-native streaming architectures
