Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Data Layer

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization that is building the next generation of process orchestration and automation technology. Our client is a globally distributed, remote-first company experiencing rapid growth as they transform how enterprises coordinate complex workflows across AI agents, people, and systems.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Data Layer team, you'll tackle technically challenging problems at the intersection of relational databases and search technologies. You'll design and build the storage and query infrastructure that keeps process data fast, accurate, and available at scale—powering everything from real-time process monitoring to emerging agent-driven automation capabilities.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer, working across relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch with a focus on correctness, performance, and scale
• Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, partnering with Product Management to break down requirements into concrete solution designs and drive projects to timely, high-quality completion
• Evolve how process data is processed, retained, and exposed to meet customer needs, including streaming data to external systems
• Improve performance and scalability of secondary storage systems as usage grows, building tooling that makes the data layer easier to understand, troubleshoot, and operate safely in production
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating data layer production issues and feeding insights back into product improvements

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• At least 7 years of experience as a backend engineer with strong focus on production data stores
• Deep hands-on experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or MSSQL preferred) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, including practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade-offs
• Proven track record leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end—from solution design and project planning to cross-team coordination and predictable delivery
• Comfort investigating slow queries, execution plans, and index usage to diagnose data-related production issues
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment, with ability to translate requirements into actionable technical work and provide clear, direct feedback in code review
• Willingness to learn and use the product you're building

Nice to have:

• Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software
• Experience building or maintaining CI pipelines
• Understanding of database migration tooling (Liquibase, Flyway) and schema evolution in live systems

Pay

Compensation for this role is competitive and location-based. The annual total target cash (base salary plus variable compensation where applicable) ranges as follows:

• United States: $143,800 to $231,900
• United Kingdom: £90,300 to £148,500
• Singapore: S$178,600 to S$267,900
• Canada: C$152,700 to C$251,200

Final offers depend on skills, experience, and specific location within these markets. Equity participation is also available through the client's stock option program. For candidates in other locations, compensation details will be provided during the screening process.
