Engineering Director, EU

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization that is expanding across Europe. Our client is building and scaling a multi-market European banking operation and seeks an Engineering Director to lead this strategic initiative from their Cardiff or UK remote location.

This is a rare opportunity to lead engineering for European market expansion, working at the intersection of product development, regulatory compliance, and multi-market growth. You'll lead a distributed engineering organization and partner with teams across the business to deliver localized banking experiences across multiple countries.

Responsibilities

• Lead a distributed engineering organisation spanning multiple squads, markets and countries across the UK, Spain and remote locations
• Build and develop Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders
• Partner with Product, Design, Data, Research, Operations, Risk and Compliance leaders to define and execute European expansion strategy
• Drive alignment and execution across numerous teams to ensure European markets receive necessary capabilities
• Shape approaches to market expansion, localisation, regulatory requirements and multi-market product development
• Influence priorities and outcomes across teams outside your direct reporting structure
• Create clarity and momentum in highly ambiguous problem spaces where ownership and solutions are not always obvious
• Design and evolve organisational structures, operating models and planning processes that support European scaling
• Help identify and validate product-market fit in new markets while balancing short-term delivery and long-term strategic investments
• Partner closely with executive leadership to shape the future of the European business

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience leading large engineering organisations through other leaders, including Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors
• Success operating in highly complex organisations where outcomes depend on cross-functional collaboration
• Exceptional relationship-building skills and ability to influence without direct authority
• Strong capability to navigate ambiguity and create clarity where goals, ownership or priorities are undefined
• Experience scaling organisations through periods of rapid growth, organisational change or market expansion
• Passion for solving organisational and business problems, not just technical ones
• Ability to balance strategy and execution, translating ambitious goals into tangible outcomes
• Comfort making decisions in environments without perfect answers
• Strong track record of building high-performing leadership teams and developing future leaders
• Energy and enthusiasm for building something new and shaping international expansion
