Senior Security Engineer

An Introduction to This Role

We are representing a confidential payments infrastructure company in the United Kingdom. Our client is seeking a Senior Security Engineer to join their product security team in a genuinely formative role. You would be the second hire on the team, working closely with a senior engineer to build and deliver the entire product security function for a platform processing payments at scale.

This is a hands-on delivery role with real ownership. You'll help shape security strategy while executing the day-to-day work: threat modelling, security reviews, compliance support, tooling automation, and close partnership with engineering teams. Security sits embedded with the teams building the product rather than operating separately, so you'll spend meaningful time working alongside Cloud, Infrastructure, and product engineers.

Responsibilities

• Run security reviews and threat modelling on features and systems across the product, turning findings into clear, actionable guidance for engineering teams
• Independently plan and deliver your own security projects from initial design through to rollout
• Build tooling and automation that makes future reviews faster and more efficient
• Coordinate penetration testing and track remediation through to closure
• Support recurring compliance work including SOC2 and PCI, covering evidence collection and remediation tracking within fixed audit windows
• Contribute to application security roadmap initiatives across areas like application threats, AI security, supply chain security, and ASPM
• Pick up proactive security work, threat research, and hands-on investigation that a one-person function has never had capacity for
• Work alongside Cloud, Infrastructure, and GRC teams on security aspects of their projects

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Working experience in product or application security with proven ability to conduct security reviews and threat modelling
• Ability to read and write code—you're comfortable building small tools and automation, not just reviewing code
• Sound judgement about risk with the ability to weigh real threats against theoretical ones and explain your reasoning clearly
• Ability to plan and deliver your own work independently once you understand direction, while knowing when to pull in senior support
• Clear communication skills with engineers who aren't security specialists, as most of your impact comes through their work

Nice to Have:

• Exposure to compliance frameworks like SOC2 or PCI, or genuine appetite to learn them
• Background in payments, fintech, or another regulated, high-stakes domain
• Interest in areas like supply chain security, detection engineering, or AI security

Important Notes:

• This is a fully remote role with high autonomy—you'll get direction but nobody checks your progress daily
• You'll move between proactive project work and reactive business-as-usual tasks, and priorities will shift as audits and incidents arise
• The role requires tolerance for change and the ability to work independently
