Staff Backend Engineer (.NET) (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential hospitality technology organization seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join their Platform team in München, Germany. This is a high-impact individual contributor role working directly with principal-level technical leadership on infrastructure, developer experience, and security foundations that serve the entire engineering organization.

This position offers significant autonomy and ownership. You'll take on large, ambiguous, cross-cutting initiatives and drive them from initial analysis through completion. The team operates without traditional groomed backlogs or sprint planning—engineers own major topics end to end, making this ideal for those who thrive on identifying problems worth solving and driving solutions independently.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems
• Self-identify and scope platform problems and initiatives, independently assessing impact, prioritization, and timing
• Lead architectural decisions and design discussions requiring cross-team alignment
• Drive large, ambiguous, cross-cutting initiatives from start to finish, coordinating with multiple stakeholders
• Mentor engineers and champion technical excellence across the organization
• Build and maintain internal tools and infrastructure (AWS, Terraform) that enable teams to deliver faster and more reliably
• Own observability, logging, and operational excellence to maintain high platform availability
• Participate in on-call rotations and serve as a reliable problem solver during incidents
• Proactively identify opportunities where AI and automation can drive technical improvements

Current technical challenges include:

• Solving horizontal write-scaling for database infrastructure (read scaling already implemented)
• Modernizing CI/CD pipelines for faster, more reliable delivery
• Migrating infrastructure-as-code fully from CloudFormation to Terraform, including complete environment recreation capability
• Extracting and reworking common services to prepare for next-scale growth

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 8+ years of backend development experience, including several years in staff-level or technical leadership roles
• Strong engineering fundamentals that transfer across languages and cloud platforms
• Proven track record owning large technical initiatives from ambiguity through completion, ideally on platform or infrastructure teams
• Experience designing and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred; strong Azure fundamentals with genuine enthusiasm for migration also valued)
• Solid experience with containerized services and infrastructure-as-code (Docker, Terraform; CloudFormation exposure relevant to current stack)
• Confidence writing unit and integration tests independently (no dedicated QA function)
• Fluent English

Preferred experience:

• Direct hands-on work with C# (.NET), PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS/Kubernetes
• Setting up infrastructure-as-code from scratch, ideally with Terraform, including migration or consolidation from other IaC approaches
• Kafka or other event-driven and streaming systems (Azure Service Bus experience transferable)
• AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, ChatGPT, Amazon CodeWhisperer) and genuine interest in AI-driven engineering improvement
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, particularly for introducing new technologies to teams
