Senior DevOps Engineer (all genders)

About the Role

We are representing a confidential natural health eCommerce organization in Berlin for their first dedicated in-house Senior DevOps Engineer role. Our client operates a high-traffic platform serving millions of monthly active users, supported by a development organization of 30+ engineers and substantial AWS infrastructure spend.

This is a strategic technical leadership position reporting directly to the Head of eCommerce Platforms. You will define infrastructure vision, own cloud economics, and drive two major engineering initiatives: bringing the entire infrastructure under Terraform and strengthening scalability, security, and compliance across cloud environments.

Responsibilities

• Shape and define infrastructure vision for deployment, monitoring, and scaling across production environments
• Serve as in-house technical counterpart to external infrastructure partners, building architecture and standards collaboratively
• Own and optimize substantial AWS spend, identifying cost reduction opportunities while maintaining performance
• Act as technical escalation point for production incidents and critical infrastructure decisions
• Manage AWS infrastructure including EC2, RDS, Fargate, CloudFront, S3, IAM, plus Cloudflare, DNS, and WAF
• Implement DevSecOps practices, conduct system audits, manage patching and access reviews
• Ensure GDPR-compliant data handling across all environments
• Lead migration from manually managed infrastructure to fully Terraform-defined code
• Tune and optimize MySQL databases under production load, including replication and tested backup restoration
• Support delivery pipeline for 30+ developers using Bitbucket Pipelines
• Maintain reliability and monitoring using New Relic, Sentry, CloudWatch, and PagerDuty

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 7+ years running production infrastructure with deep hands-on AWS experience
• Security-conscious operations including DevSecOps practices, system audits, and GDPR-relevant data handling
• Infrastructure as code expertise with Terraform at scale
• Deep Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) systems knowledge with kernel-level troubleshooting ability
• MySQL performance tuning under real load: slow-query analysis, replication, indexing, recovery testing
• Experience building monitoring and incident response systems that proactively catch issues
• Track record defining and enforcing standards for engineering teams and external partners
• Professional proficiency in English and German

Preferred:

• PHP-FPM performance tuning or experience with Varnish and Redis at scale
• Cloud cost optimization at six-figure annual spend levels
• AWS architecture certification
• Experience with SIEM tooling (e.g., Wazuh) or security monitoring platforms
• Background in high-traffic eCommerce or consumer-facing system operations
