About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential database technology organization in their search for a Senior Consulting Engineer to join their data migration practice remotely in Germany. Our client is building the playbooks for enterprise-scale data migrations in the AI era, and this role sits at the intersection of hands-on technical delivery, pre-sales consulting, and practice development.

This is a builder role. You will lead production data migrations from relational and NoSQL platforms, design zero-downtime cutover strategies, and create the AI-assisted tooling that makes migrations faster and safer. You will work directly with enterprise architects, DBAs, and platform teams through whiteboard sessions to war rooms, then turn what you learn into reusable frameworks for the wider practice.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lead end-to-end technical delivery of data migration engagements: source estate assessment, migration strategy and wave planning, schema transformation, pipeline build, validation, and production cutover with minimal downtime
• Design and operate change data capture (CDC) pipelines for zero and near-zero-downtime migrations using Kafka, Debezium, cloud-native replication services, and the connector ecosystem
• Bring platform depth on the estates customers are leaving—Cassandra data modeling, Cosmos DB partitioning and RU economics, DocumentDB compatibility surface—and use it to de-risk what the customer cannot see coming
• Work directly with enterprise customers from planning through post-engagement follow-up, owning the full consulting lifecycle and surfacing risks and opportunities back to account teams
• Partner with Solutions Architects and Engagement Managers to scope migration opportunities, shape statements of work, and provide well-founded confidence in what is achievable
• Build and harden AI tooling for automated estate assessment, schema conversion, query translation, and large-scale data validation, then fold what works into standard delivery methodology
• Turn field experience into reusable assets: migration playbooks, reference architectures, estimation models, and enablement materials
• Cultivate your reputation as a migrations subject matter expert internally and in the market

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Degree in Computer Science or similar technical field
• 5+ years in software engineering, data engineering, or consulting delivery roles centered on data platforms and data movement at production scale
• Hands-on experience with at least one distributed NoSQL platform (Apache Cassandra, Azure Cosmos DB, Amazon DocumentDB, or similar)—deep enough to reason about data models, consistency, partitioning, and failure modes
• Real-world CDC and streaming-pipeline experience: Kafka or Confluent Platform, connectors, Debezium or equivalent, schema evolution, exactly-once versus at-least-once trade-offs, backfill-plus-tail patterns
• Solid grounding in relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL) and extracting data without breaking production systems
• Competence in at least one programming language (Java, Python, Node.js, C#, Go, or similar)—enough to build pipeline glue, validation harnesses, and tooling
• Working fluency with AI in real engineering workflows
• Excellent analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills, with composure under pressure during production cutovers
• Strong customer interaction and presentation skills: ability to explain technical strategies to DBAs and risk profiles to senior leadership with equal clarity
• Entrepreneurial bias and comfort operating where process does not yet exist

Nice to Have:

• Experience building with LLMs beyond personal productivity; using LLMs and coding agents as part of delivery today
• Migration or replication tooling experience: Spark or Flink-based pipelines, dual-write patterns, cloud DMS-class services, data-validation frameworks
• One or more cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) at architecture depth
• Experience on the vendor or consulting side of competitive platform displacements
• Fluency in a second European language relevant to the German market

Work Arrangement: Remote in Germany, with travel up to approximately 30% primarily within EMEA
