Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Fire Protection

Ramboll seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer specialized in fire protection systems to join our engineering team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is a full-time position for a seasoned professional ready to lead complex fire protection projects from design through construction delivery.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer focused on fire protection, you'll design, specify, and oversee fire suppression and detection systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities across the Southeast. You'll take ownership of projects from conceptual design through construction administration, working directly with architects, building owners, and contractors to deliver code-compliant systems that protect lives and assets. This role offers leadership opportunities to mentor junior engineers while staying current with evolving fire codes and building technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Design fire protection systems including sprinkler networks, foam suppression, dry chemical systems, and fire detection per NFPA standards and local building codes
• Develop construction drawings, equipment specifications, and system documentation using AutoCAD and BIM platforms
• Perform hydraulic calculations and system analysis to verify performance and optimize design efficiency
• Coordinate fire protection integration with MEP disciplines and architectural systems
• Conduct site visits and field assessments during design development and construction phases
• Review contractor submittals and manage testing, inspection, and system commissioning
• Guide junior engineers and contribute to proposal development for new business opportunities

Requirements

• Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or eligibility to obtain one
• Minimum 8 years of mechanical engineering experience with at least 5 years in fire protection design
• Comprehensive knowledge of NFPA 13, 72, 75, and applicable fire protection and building codes
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and BIM software (Revit strongly preferred)
• Experience with hydraulic analysis and fire protection system modeling tools
• Excellent communication and team collaboration skills across multidisciplinary projects
• Willingness to travel regionally for site reviews and client engagements
