About this role & career path
City Year service is structured as a full-time, benefits-eligible national service commitment focused on education and youth development. Many alumni use the year to build classroom experience, soft skills, and a pathway into teaching, social services, nonprofit work, or further study—not a traditional corporate ladder at a single employer.
Build the skills for this role
No formal certifications are required in the provided data. Strengthen tutoring and literacy/numeracy support, classroom presence, relationship skills with adolescents, teamwork, and basic data/progress tracking used in school settings. AmeriCorps/City Year onboarding typically covers program norms more than paid third-party certs.
Expect questions about why service, working with underserved students, handling setbacks, and collaborating on a diverse team. Prepare concrete examples of mentoring, tutoring, or community work; show stamina for a full school-year schedule; and connect your motivation to City Year’s stay-in-school mission rather than only résumé padding.
