Tech Lead – E-Commerce (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce organization based in Berlin that powers millions of customer transactions across multiple European markets. Our client is seeking a Tech Lead to own the technical direction of a cross-functional engineering team at the core of their platform—driving the systems that enable product discovery, checkout, and everything in between.

As Tech Lead, you will define architecture, establish quality standards, and translate product goals into scalable systems built on Java, Spring Boot, and Vue.js. You will shape how your team engineers: establishing Spec Driven Development practices, setting guardrails for AI-assisted workflows, and developing engineers who think in systems—not just features. This role means taking end-to-end ownership of the code, the team, and the business impact.

Responsibilities

• Define the architecture and technical vision for your team's services within the e-commerce platform (Java, Spring Boot, Vue.js)
• Make architectural decisions, reduce technical debt, and maintain a healthy, future-proof codebase
• Pioneer Spec Driven Development in daily engineering workflows and establish quality gates for AI-generated code
• Shape team processes, rituals, and culture while mentoring engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance
• Collaborate closely with Product and UX to continuously improve customer journeys and conversion metrics
• Enable data-driven decisions through A/B testing and experimentation
• Take end-to-end responsibility for team delivery and operational stability
• Coordinate with adjacent product teams across the e-commerce domain

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of professional software development with a track record of delivering complex, high-performance web applications at scale
• Hands-on technical leadership experience guiding decisions, coordinating implementation, and developing engineers
• Strong coding skills across a modern e-commerce stack: Java on the backend, JavaScript (Vue.js, Angular, or React) on the frontend, with a fullstack mindset
• Experience building or owning features in at least two core e-commerce domains (checkout, payments, routing, product listings, search, order management, or similar) with understanding of scale challenges
• Active use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) in daily workflows, with clear opinions on their strengths, limitations, and appropriate guardrails
• Systems thinking across services, domains, and team boundaries with ability to make and communicate architectural trade-offs clearly to engineers and stakeholders
• Proficiency in English required; German is a strong plus as internal communication uses both languages

Bonus Skills:

• Experience with cloud services (AWS), monitoring (New Relic, OpenTelemetry), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
• Event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and observability at scale
• Experience with technical SEO/GEO
