About This Opportunity
We are representing a growing, family-owned technology organization in Freiburg im Breisgau that develops hardware and software solutions for industrial machine vision and automation. Their systems are deployed in over 15,000 machines worldwide.
As a Linux System Administrator, you'll join a deliberately small IT team with significant autonomy to shape the technical direction. Instead of rigid corporate structures, you'll experience short decision paths, direct collaboration with leadership, and the opportunity to actively influence technical decisions. The technology focus is squarely on Linux and open source.
In the coming years, exciting projects await: migrating existing applications to open source alternatives, expanding cyber security and resilience capabilities, and continuously developing an internal Linux-based AI server. If Linux is your technical home and you prefer developing new solutions over simply maintaining existing systems, this is your chance to shape an IT landscape for the long term.
Responsibilities
- Manage and optimize the Linux system landscape along with associated network and IT infrastructure
- Continuously develop existing systems and guide migrations from standard software to suitable open source alternatives
- Work with virtualization and container technologies including Proxmox, Docker, and vSphere
- Automate processes using Python, Ansible, or comparable technologies
- Advance security and resilience initiatives, addressing technical requirements around NIS 2, GDPR, CRA, and TISAX
- Manage and expand the company's internal Linux-based AI server, creating secure infrastructure for internal AI usage
- Resolve complex internal IT issues for primarily technical users, focusing on second and third-level support
What We're Looking For
- Completed apprenticeship as IT specialist, IT system administrator, completed computer science degree, or comparable qualification
- Minimum two years of professional experience with clear focus on Linux administration following completion of training or studies
- Very strong Linux knowledge - you already work routinely with Linux and don't need to learn the operating system from scratch
- Solid understanding of networking, network protocols, and IT infrastructure
- Experience with virtualization or container technologies such as Proxmox, Docker, or vSphere
- Knowledge of automation, for example with Python, Ansible, or comparable technologies
- Enthusiasm for open source and interest in building an IT landscape on open and secure solutions for the long term
- Business-fluent German at minimum C1 level and fluent English
- Independent, pragmatic working style with desire to actively shape technical decisions and try new solutions together with the team
- Knowledge of Nextcloud, Open Xchange, Nginx, pfSense, OpenVPN, Git, or Ceph as well as IT security experience are advantageous
Benefits our client offers:
- Significant creative freedom to shape IT direction in Linux, open source, cyber security, resilience, and automation
- Exciting future projects including open source migrations, IT security expansion, and internal Linux-based AI server development
- Direct collaboration with leadership, short decision paths, and freedom in technical solutions
- Flexible working hours without fixed core hours, typically one day per week home office (more remote work possible by arrangement)
- 30 vacation days with individual solutions for longer breaks when needed
- Annual success-based bonus (several thousand euros in successful years)
- Subsidized public transport ticket, bike leasing, company parking, free e-car charging, and pool vehicles for business appointments
- Health benefits, on-site climbing wall and table tennis, colleague-organized activities like climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking
- Team events including summer festival, Christmas party, rooftop BBQs, and multi-day developer camps for exploring new technologies
- Individually tailored professional development and a mentor from another business area as personal sparring partner
