About This Role

We are representing a confidential software organization in Germany that operates hosting infrastructure for over 150 enterprise customers across Europe. Our talent team is seeking a System Engineer specializing in Linux infrastructure and virtualization to take ownership of their hosting operations and lead a critical platform migration.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Bad Lippspringe with flexible remote work options throughout Germany. You'll report directly to the CIO with clear ownership of infrastructure operations that power mission-critical SaaS platforms.

Responsibilities

In your first six months, you will take over day-to-day operations of the existing VPS infrastructure including provisioning, patching, hardening, monitoring, and cost control. You'll establish comprehensive documentation of virtualization, storage, network, and firewall systems, conduct honest assessment of backup recoverability with real restore testing, and become the primary escalation point for infrastructure operations.

Beyond the transition phase, you will guide and operate a VMware-to-Proxmox VE migration, taking operational responsibility for cluster management including updates, storage, and network configuration. You'll manage environments serving the production SaaS platform with focus on capacity planning, performance optimization, and availability. Your work includes provisioning new customer environments throughout their lifecycle, building Infrastructure-as-Code foundations using Terraform and Ansible, and establishing rigorous backup and restore discipline with regular testing and ransomware resilience measures.

You'll implement security hardening aligned with ISO 27001 requirements, maintain operational runbooks and emergency documentation, and contribute to DevOps processes including deployments, containers, monitoring, and logging. The role includes co-managing Windows server infrastructure and providing 2nd/3rd-level support for complex server and application issues.

An optional growth path includes consulting with customers on their own Proxmox and hosting architecture projects, covering HA and storage design, migrations, and technical training.

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

  • Multiple years of production experience operating Linux servers (Debian/Ubuntu) with deep troubleshooting capabilities at the system level
  • Production hypervisor experience with solid understanding of compute, storage, and networking layers—specific vendor experience is secondary to fundamental knowledge
  • Proven experience operating publicly accessible infrastructure including networking, firewalls, TLS, reverse proxies (Traefik/NGINX), DNS, and security hardening
  • Strong Bash scripting skills and automation experience with Ansible
  • Hands-on backup and restore experience with the discipline that backups only count after successful restore testing
  • Self-directed work style with ability to prioritize independently
  • Practical use of AI tools beyond chatbots—integrated into daily operations, scripting, and analysis
  • German C1 and English B2 language proficiency
  • Clear communication skills for handoffs, ticket documentation, and status reporting

Valuable but not required:

  • Proxmox VE and/or Proxmox Backup Server experience
  • VMware or Hyper-V migration experience
  • Deep expertise with storage technologies like Ceph, ZFS, or SAN/NAS systems
  • Infrastructure-as-Code production experience with Terraform, OpenTofu, or Pulumi
  • Cloud/VPS provider experience including cost management
  • Cluster management, high availability design, performance optimization, and capacity planning
  • Docker, container orchestration, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipeline experience
  • Mixed Windows/Linux environment experience (Active Directory, PowerShell)
  • Database operations knowledge (MS SQL, PostgreSQL) and web/API stack understanding
  • Consulting or technical training background
  • Formal IT education or equivalent practical learning
