Staff Software Engineer – Data

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential blockchain analytics client in their search for a Staff Software Engineer to own their data infrastructure. This is a high-impact role designing how blockchain data flows through large-scale distributed systems—from ingestion through storage and delivery.

Our client is a remote-first organization with team members across Europe and the eastern United States. You'll work with ambiguous product requirements, translate them into concrete technical designs, and build the most complex components yourself while enabling the team to execute the rest.

Responsibilities

• Turn product requirements into technical requirements: model the domain, define interfaces and workflows, and navigate trade-offs
• Break large problems into sequenced work packages that other engineers can own, ensuring early delivery of valuable features
• Drive high-impact architectural decisions across the data platform and own components end-to-end from design through production
• Work across the stack using Go, Kotlin, Rust, and Python—choosing the right tool for the problem rather than the familiar one
• Design for correctness and performance at scale: large-volume ingestion, distributed processing, and data lake storage
• Raise the bar on design reviews, testing practices, and work decomposition
• Mentor engineers by example in a fully distributed environment

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Strong generalist background with solid computer science fundamentals that enable quick adaptation to new technologies
• First-principles reasoning: you make assumptions explicit, identify critical constraints and invariants, and derive solutions rather than applying familiar patterns
• Real experience designing and shipping distributed data systems with explicit contracts, state transitions, invariants, and failure modes
• Deep understanding of fault models and scaling weaknesses in distributed systems
• Comfort with ambiguity: you engage with product and customers, then commit to scope and defend it
• Proficiency with AI coding tools—you understand their failure modes and use them to meaningfully change how you work
• Clear written communication skills that enable async collaboration in distributed teams

Preferred:

• Experience with data lake formats such as Parquet, Iceberg, or Delta Lake
• Background at companies where data is the core product
