We are representing a confidential insurance organization seeking a Senior Director of Commercial Surety Underwriting & Business Development to lead profitable growth for their small commercial surety operations. Responsibilities

• Lead strategy and guidelines for regional surety underwriting teams to achieve production and profitability targets
• Serve as the primary strategic contact for regional leaders, supporting underwriting decisions on the largest and most complex accounts
• Conduct detailed market research to inform policy and practice decisions for the commercial surety segment
• Analyze portfolio and individual account performance, developing action plans to drive sustainable growth
• Manage underwriting processes and authority levels for regional office staff, implementing continuous improvement initiatives
• Lead annual agent segmentation to identify premier partnerships and create focused marketing plans
• Track monthly production activity and provide growth estimates to senior leadership
• Develop state expansion plans including rate filings, system requirements, and agent appointment processes
• Lead underwriting file audits and provide guidance to directors on findings and recommendations
• Participate in annual budget forecasting and production goal setting by region and state
• Provide competitive intelligence and industry updates, recommending adjustments to underwriting philosophy based on market conditions
• Travel with staff to strengthen relationships with key agents and large accounts
• Partner with underwriting leaders to develop training programs ensuring associate proficiency and professionalism

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Ten years of experience in surety underwriting, including at least five years in management or consultant roles
• Extensive knowledge of commercial surety and fidelity products, credit analysis, rating functions, and surety market dynamics
• Deep understanding of surety underwriting methodologies and field operations
• Demonstrated decision-making ability in evaluating and recommending solutions to complex underwriting issues
• Proven ability to manage and lead associates across all aspects of surety operations
• Strong analytical skills for portfolio assessment and strategic planning
• Excellent communication skills for maintaining relationships with leadership, sales teams, agents, and other stakeholders
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed

Preferred:

• Undergraduate degree in business administration, insurance, risk management, economics, or finance
• AFSB, CPCU, or other related insurance certifications (actively pursuing or completed)
• Familiarity with other lines of business beyond surety
