Sr. Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential industrial technology organization that is transforming how materials trading works across European markets. Our client operates at significant scale, serving multiple countries with sophisticated AI-driven operations.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will serve as a technical anchor for the engineering team—leading architecture decisions, raising quality standards, and operating with high autonomy while staying deeply collaborative. This is a senior individual contributor role with meaningful technical leadership responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Take full ownership of complex backend systems from initial design through production deployment, including architecture, implementation, and long-term maintenance
• Lead technical discussions, drive engineering decisions, and document trade-offs clearly for the broader team
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and structured feedback
• Identify systemic weaknesses in infrastructure, propose concrete improvements, and execute independently
• Collaborate across engineering, product, and data teams to align technical direction with business objectives
• Drive improvements to observability, reliability, and performance across the backend stack
• Participate in technical interviews and help define engineering standards as the team scales

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience with a proven track record of owning critical production systems
• Deep expertise in Java (Spring Boot) and strong working knowledge of Python; comfortable in polyglot codebases
• Demonstrated experience designing distributed systems including event-driven architecture, microservices, and data pipelines
• Strong command of PostgreSQL and hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure on AWS
• Experience navigating hypergrowth or scaling challenges—you have the instincts and lessons learned from real production battles
• A force multiplier who elevates the engineers around you through clear communication, thoughtful feedback, and technical clarity
• Comfortable operating in ambiguity—you can shape requirements and define solutions, not just execute on specifications
