Director of Performance

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential national sports organization seeking a Director of Performance to lead their elite athletic program. You will work directly with the CEO to shape and evolve the competitive culture of a world-class team with a distinguished Olympic and Paralympic heritage. This role stewards the cultural environment as a critical component of the performance system, recognizing its influence on athlete development, coaching effectiveness, innovation, and competitive outcomes.

Your responsibilities include:

• Designing, measuring, and evolving the cultural environment within the high-performance program
• Leading strategy for athlete development, coaching teams, sport science, medicine, and technology integration
• Overseeing international competition planning and talent pathway programs
• Managing significant operational budgets and ensuring resource allocation aligns with performance goals
• Partnering with multiple stakeholders, including governing bodies, volunteers, and international federations
• Making strategic decisions that balance athlete wellbeing with competitive excellence
• Ensuring governance standards and business drivers are met at the senior leadership level

What We're Looking For

Our client requires a values-led leader with:

• Proven ability to build and lead modern high-performance cultures that prioritize people, wellbeing, and long-term athlete success
• Experience leading elite sport environments at the highest level, with strong rowing or Olympic/Paralympic expertise
• Deep understanding of coaching methodologies, sport science, sports medicine, performance technology, and international competition frameworks
• Demonstrable experience managing significant budgets in elite sports or performance environments
• Strategic thinking combined with exceptional planning, leadership, and organizational skills
• Results-oriented mindset with the courage to make tough decisions and raise performance standards
• Proven ability to work effectively with multiple partners, stakeholders, and volunteer networks
• Strong understanding of broader business drivers and senior-level governance in sports organizations
• Resilience, stamina, and flexibility to thrive in high-pressure competitive environments
• Outstanding communication skills across written, verbal, and presentation formats
• Deep commitment to Olympic and Paralympic ideals and values
