Senior Software Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization in their search for a Senior Software Engineer focused on infrastructure automation and cloud operations. This is a remote position for a technical professional who writes production-grade code daily—not ad hoc scripts—to solve complex infrastructure challenges at scale.

In this role, you will design and build scalable automation frameworks using Python, Jinja2, and Terraform to streamline cloud infrastructure provisioning and configuration management. You will also work with Puppet for managing mixed Linux and Windows environments and develop PowerShell automation to optimize Windows platforms.

This is a coding-focused engineering position requiring someone who applies software development best practices—testable code, CI/CD integration, and reusable automation components—to drive operational excellence across cloud and hybrid environments.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable automation frameworks in Python that enable consistent, repeatable deployments across cloud and on-premises environments
• Build and enhance Terraform code-generation platforms using Python and Jinja2, producing validated infrastructure code from reusable templates
• Develop and maintain Puppet modules, manifests, and Hiera configurations for managing Linux and Windows systems at scale
• Create robust PowerShell automation solutions for server management, Active Directory administration, and hybrid cloud integrations
• Develop internal automation tools, CLI utilities, and APIs that enable engineering teams to self-service common operational tasks
• Integrate automation frameworks with CI/CD pipelines for automated validation, testing, and deployment of infrastructure changes
• Implement comprehensive testing strategies including unit testing, linting, and integration testing for infrastructure code
• Partner with cloud, platform, and application teams to identify manual processes and drive automation-first solutions
• Create documentation, standards, and runbooks for automation frameworks and infrastructure templates
• Participate in code reviews and continuously improve quality, security, and maintainability of automation solutions

What We're Looking For

Python & Automation Development

• 5+ years of Python development experience writing structured, testable application code
• Strong understanding of Python packaging, virtual environments, dependency management (pip, Poetry), and code quality tooling (pylint, black, mypy)
• Experience building CLI tools and automation frameworks using Python (Click, Typer, or similar)
• Hands-on experience with Jinja2 templating for building reusable, parameterized templates
• Experience with pytest for unit and integration testing of automation code

Terraform & Infrastructure as Code

• Strong Terraform proficiency: module design, state management, remote backends, workspaces, and dependency graphs
• Proven experience generating Terraform HCL programmatically using Python and Jinja2
• Familiarity with Terraform tooling: tflint, tfsec, terraform-docs, Terragrunt, or Atlantis
• Understanding of Terraform provider internals and resource lifecycle management

Puppet & Configuration Management

• Hands-on Puppet experience: writing manifests and modules, Hiera data hierarchies, node classification, and r10k/Code Manager workflows
• Experience managing mixed Linux and Windows environments with Puppet at scale
• Familiarity with puppet-lint, rspec-puppet, and automated Puppet module testing pipelines
• Understanding of Puppet Enterprise or open-source Puppet Server administration

PowerShell Scripting

• Proficient PowerShell scripting for Windows Server administration, task automation, and hybrid cloud integrations
• Experience writing reusable PowerShell modules, functions, and error-handling patterns
• Familiarity with Pester for PowerShell unit testing
• Experience automating Active Directory, Group Policy, or Windows networking tasks

Cloud & Infrastructure

• Solid AWS experience: EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, and CloudWatch
• Familiarity with CI/CD platforms and integrating infrastructure code pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI)
• Comfortable working with Linux and Windows Server in production environments
