Senior Search Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer to join their Search Foundation Team in München. In this role, you will design and implement modern search functionalities that power product discovery and cross-domain search capabilities.

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Designing and implementing search functionalities in a PaaS backend using Scala
• Developing search-related libraries based on ElasticSearch and MongoDB
• Running and maintaining scalable search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture
• Testing software components for usability, functionality, and performance
• Collaborating closely with Product Management and DevOps teams
• Participating in on-call rotations with a globally distributed team for production systems
• Learning and applying Scala and functional programming patterns as your primary development tools

This is a hybrid position requiring three days per week in the München office.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer working with JVM-based languages
• Search-related experience, preferably with ElasticSearch
• Strong DevOps mindset with the ability to drive infrastructure improvements
• Interest in working with Scala using pragmatic functional programming patterns
• Practical experience developing server-side systems on the JVM
• Solid understanding of parallel and asynchronous programming, as well as non-blocking I/O
• Experience developing REST APIs and knowledge of scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover
• Fluent English for international team collaboration
• Curiosity about using AI tools to enhance productivity and effectiveness

Nice to have:

• Experience with scalable event-driven architectures including queues, notification topics, and related patterns
• Previous experience with Scala or other functional programming languages
• Infrastructure experience with technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
