Senior Search Backend Engineer (m/f/x)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential ecommerce technology organization seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer for their Berlin office. Our client is building next-generation commerce infrastructure, and this role will focus on developing modern search experiences that enable product discovery at scale.

This is a hybrid position requiring three days per week in the Berlin office.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement search functionalities in a PaaS ecommerce Scala backend
• Develop search-related libraries based on ElasticSearch and MongoDB
• Run and maintain scalable search infrastructure as code on top of Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture
• Test software components regarding usability, functionality, and performance
• Collaborate closely with Product Management and DevOps teams
• Participate in on-call rotations with a globally distributed team for production systems
• Learn and apply Scala and functional programming as primary development tools

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer working with JVM-based languages
• Search-related experience, preferably with ElasticSearch
• Strong DevOps mindset with experience driving infrastructure improvements
• Interest in working with Scala using pragmatic functional programming patterns
• Practical experience developing server-side systems using the JVM
• Solid understanding of parallel and asynchronous programming, plus non-blocking I/O
• Experience developing REST APIs and knowledge of scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover
• Fluent English for working in international teams
• Curiosity for using AI tools to work more effectively

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with scalable event-driven architectures including queues and notification topics
• Prior work with Scala or other functional programming languages
• Experience with infrastructure technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
