Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization that is building critical infrastructure for merchant acquisition, sales operations, and lifecycle intelligence. This is a greenfield opportunity within a newly formed squad focused on automating attribution, commission calculation, and merchant analytics systems that currently rely on manual processes.

You'll join at the ground level, helping to establish architectural patterns, data models, and engineering standards for systems that sales teams, leadership, and analysts will depend on. This role is based in Cologne, Germany, with an office-first setup.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend systems that aggregate data across the ecosystem to attribute merchant actions to specific acquisition channels and sales agents
• Establish data models, API contracts, and rule engines that automate commission workflows for field sales, telesales, partnerships, and referral programs
• Collaborate on building a centralized Lifecycle Event Log that stores curated merchant events (signups, product usage, verification, purchases) used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales
• Develop internal backoffice tools and APIs enabling sales representatives and leaders to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Define and document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns that other engineering teams can adopt with confidence
• Establish testing, observability, and incident response best practices for the squad
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools strategically to scaffold services, write tests, explore code, and draft documentation while maintaining accountability for production code

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience with Go, or expertise in typed languages with readiness to ramp up on Go quickly
• Proven track record designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Fluency with relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and judgment about when to use each
• Experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems with understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where decisions must be traceable—fintech, payments, or similar domains strongly preferred
• Experience building services from scratch in greenfield squads with limited context, and enthusiasm for that ambiguity
• Commitment to testing, observability, and incident response as first-class engineering concerns
• Resourcefulness and adaptability with end-to-end ownership mindset
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, translating ambiguous problems into clear engineering work
• Pragmatism about when to ship and when to invest in doing things properly
• Mentorship instincts that raise the bar for teammates, not just individual output
