Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in Berlin that is building critical infrastructure at the intersection of data engineering, backend systems, and commercial operations. This is a greenfield opportunity within a newly formed squad focused on automating merchant attribution, commission calculation, and lifecycle intelligence—processes that are currently manual and opaque.

You'll join at the very beginning, shaping the technical architecture, engineering standards, and operational patterns that power how a global payments platform understands and rewards merchant acquisition across multiple channels.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data from across a complex fintech ecosystem to attribute merchant acquisition and lifecycle events to the correct channels and sales agents
• Design and implement data models, API contracts, and automation logic for commission workflows covering field sales, tele-sales, partnerships, and merchant referrals
• Build a centralized Lifecycle Event Log capturing curated merchant events (signups, product adoption, verification, transactions) for use across attribution, support, and sales intelligence
• Develop internal backoffice tools and APIs enabling sales teams and leadership to monitor commissions, manage portfolios, modify plans, and resolve disputes
• Define and document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns that other engineering teams can adopt with confidence
• Establish squad-level best practices for testing, observability, incident response, and operational excellence
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools thoughtfully to scaffold services, generate tests, explore codebases, and draft documentation—while maintaining full accountability for production code

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering background in Go, or solid experience in typed languages with readiness to ramp quickly
• Proven track record designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning strategies, and integration patterns
• Fluency with relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and sound judgment on which to use when
• Hands-on experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems, including event sourcing and change data capture (CDC) patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where every decision must be traceable—ideally in fintech, payments, or similarly regulated domains
• Experience building services from scratch in greenfield or early-stage squads with limited prior context, and genuine excitement for that ambiguity
• Strong instincts for testing, observability, and incident response as first-class engineering concerns
• Resourcefulness and adaptability: you take end-to-end ownership, do more with less, and adjust as priorities evolve
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences—translating fuzzy business problems into clear engineering work and explaining trade-offs to both engineers and sales stakeholders
• Pragmatic judgment: you know when good enough ships value and when something truly requires deeper investment
• Mentorship instincts: you raise the bar for those around you, not just your own output
